Cosmetic veneers can be used to correct a variety of aesthetic flaws in the smile, and a prosthodontist can use this treatment option to enhance many patients’ smiles. If you are considering getting veneers, you should understand how they may be used in your case and be aware of what to expect during the course of treatment.
What are cosmetic veneers used for?
A prosthodontist may place cosmetic veneers to conceal issues including chips, deep stains or cracks in the teeth. A veneer may also be bonded on top of an undersized tooth to make it look proportionate to its neighbors. Veneers also can help to make a slightly crooked stretch of teeth look straighter without requiring months of orthodontic treatment.
What can I expect from the veneer treatment process?
The first step in getting cosmetic veneers is to be evaluated by a prosthodontist, who will review your case and discuss your treatment goals with you. Photos or dental impressions may also be taken during this time to record the information needed to design your unique veneers.
Your satisfaction is our primary goal, so we encourage you to participate fully in the process of designing your veneers. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want in terms of the shade and shape of the veneers. You’ll also be asked to choose the material used for your veneers. Porcelain veneers are popular with patients because porcelain looks so similar to tooth enamel, and the material is quite strong after it is bonded to the teeth.
Depending on the thickness of the veneer, the provider may prep your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel so that there is enough room to bond the veneer to your tooth.
Your veneers will be created by a dental lab, and when they are ready (which usually takes just a few weeks), you’ll return to our office to have the veneers bonded to your teeth. We can make additional adjustments to the veneers before they are bonded, but they can no longer be altered after that point. So it’s important that you make any final requests about the design of your veneers before they are permanently placed.
