A Healthy Mouth is a Gateway to a Healthy Body

Studies are continuing to show a strong correlation between oral health and general health, so it should come as no surprise that a healthy mouth is important for more than just a pretty smile. Neglecting your oral health can derail your efforts to live a healthy life style.

Poor dental hygiene produces consequences that affect other systems in your body, but regular dental visits can keep you healthy. The trained eye of a dentist can spot issues in the mouth which need attention and those things which may be indicative of a systemic problem.

How Oral Health and General Health Are Connected

Millions of bacteria live in the oral cavity, many of which are harmless. However, when there is an issue such as decay or gum disease these bacteria can wreak havoc in your mouth. These types of irritations are often marked by chronic inflammation, which overworks your immune system. During this time your body’s natural defenses cannot ward off other infections, which puts your health at greater risk for other illnesses.

When Plaque Builds Up

Plaque builds up on teeth naturally as you eat and drink throughout the day. It accumulates along the gum line and in between teeth where small food particles can be left behind. When it is not thoroughly removed, it hardens over time turning into tartar and allowing other bacteria to cultivate. These bacteria can enter the bloodstream through the gum line creating other chronic health complications down the road.

Keeping a Healthy Mouth

It is important to brush and floss diligently at least twice per day. Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and check-ups. They have received specialized training and utilize unique tools to clean your teeth in a way that you can’t at home. It is also necessary to get the proper nutrition. Avoid heavily processed foods and sugary drinks as much as possible.
